Builders Merchant Careers campaign helps fill the gaps.

There is currently a shortage of young people joining the builders merchant industry. As a result the BMF launched the Builders Merchant Careers campaign to help recruit young job-seekers into all areas ranging from yard work to sales and from manufacturing to marketing. In return offering them a first-rate career with brilliant professional progression and great rewards!

A big part of the Builders Merchant Careers campaign is the Ambassador Scheme. To date over 40 Ambassadors from the ranks of the BMF members support this national youth recruitment campaign. These Ambassadors are based all over the UK.

They help to promote the opportunities offered by the industry to students and young job-seekers throughout the country by visiting schools and working with their local Jobcentre.

Our first Ambassador success story comes from GPH Builders Merchant. Nikki Mortimer, Sales Director and BMF ambassador, has filled two vacancies and both successful candidates came from the Aberdeen Jobcentre. This is what Nikki had to say:

“Mike and I had a meeting with Gillian Gilchrist from Aberdeen Jobcentre who was keen to encourage us to consider individuals her team have been working with when looking to recruit staff, albeit most are from non-merchant backgrounds.

To this end, I held a day of interviews at Aberdeen Jobcentre in May, 2016 to source a replacement member of the counter team at our Stonehaven branch. I was scheduled to see 21 applicants, of which 15 came along. A short-list of 5 was drawn up, with 4 coming along for second interviews in the Stonehaven branch, together with 1 other applicant who had not come through the Jobcentre route.

I am pleased to say that we have appointed 2 new members of the team, both from the Jobcentre candidates, and they started with GPH Stonehaven in June, 2016.”

As this Builders Merchant Recruitment Campaign grows we hope to be able to share many more of these stories with you.
