Higher Education

Through the BMF, both trainee managers and established managers are able to obtain higher education qualifications. The BMF run two higher education courses. The first is a Diploma in Merchanting which can then lead to a Foundation Degree in Merchanting.

Diploma in Merchanting

The BMF offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Merchant Leadership & Strategy from Birmingham City University. It is open to senior managers working in either merchant or supplier BMF member companies and crucially working experience can be recognised to meet the entry requirements. The course takes 12 months and is a mixture of self-study and 7 two-day workshops covering five business modules. Successful graduates will be eligible to continue on to a full Masters Degree. The Postgraduate Diploma course is currently being sponsored by the Builders Merchants Training Trust who subsidise the cost per candidate.

The BMF Diploma in Merchanting offers managers and trainee managers an advanced leadership development course. It is a programme of self-study modules and workshops designed to be completed on a part time basis. The diploma focuses on the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to carry out the role of ‘front-line’ manager effectively within a merchant’s branch or office. Those who successfully complete the Diploma can continue on to a Foundation Degree in Merchanting.

Foundation Degree in Merchanting

The BMF/UWE Foundation Degree in Merchanting is arranged around four key areas – Managing People, Managing Yourself, Managing Operations and Managing Resources. Successful completion of the Diploma counts towards the BMF/UWE Foundation Degree and the final part of the Foundation Degree is a university work-based learning project where the student has the opportunity to explore how their learning could be implemented in their workplace.
